Women's Health Information

Women's health is more than just pap smears and breast checks. As women we tend to live longer than men, we use the health system differently to men and we tend to be in the majority of paid and unpaid caring roles that can put alot of strain on us and our families. Women have diverse interests and skills, talents and challenges in all aspects of life and women's health centres support women to make informed decisions about health and well being in all areas of their lives.

" Women have been leaders in change"

Women came together and established health information sources and women's health centres so that women could become better informed about the unique factors that impact on women. We did what we do really well - and cooperated and worked together to address needs that we saw in our communities.

" Women's health concerns extend far beyond reproduction."

For example, women's patterns of illness are often different from those of men. These are not unique to women, but women do experience much higher rates of illness such as breast cancer, depression, arthritis, lupus and self-inflicted injuries than men. Coupled with the fact that women tend to live longer, we tend to experience more chronic illness. While both women and men may try to achieve popular ideals of beauty through too much/extreme dieting and exercise and even surgery, women are more likely than men to put their health at risk in this way.

"Diseases and illness are often no the same in men and women"

Research traditionally focused on men and assumed that the results also applied to women. But signs and symptoms of many conditions may be quite different for men and women. Also women and men may require different treatment or respond differently to the same treatment. Targeted and informed approaches to treating the person based on the unique physiology and symptomology that we know to be different in men and women will provide the best results.

"It is important to consider the whole person"

WOMEN'S Healthworks offers programs and services that adhere to the social model of health. This means that women are considered as a whole person who is part of a family and community; who has many unique and varied characteristics and lifestyle differences including age, cultural background, sexual orientation, disability, financial and employment status.
